"Point-2-Point
Setting-out evenly spaced dovetails on the end of a
board is traditionally done by dividing the board into
equal divisions. When the width of the board is odd
(say 433mm) the technique is to draw a line diagonally
across the board that is easier to divide. If the line was
450mm long it could be divided into 5 divisions of
90mm. Drawing two 450mm Lines parallel allows you
to join the dots and draw equal divisions. This technique
is a revelation for those who have not seen it in
action, however you still have to do some mathematics.
The Point 2 Point device has taken all the mathematics
out of the equation. This clever expanding
gadget will always produce equal divisions in
baords up to 610mm wide. You can walk the Point 2
Point across wider boards to produce more divisions
or you can use just a couple of
the legs to make fewer divisions.
The Point 2 Point is flexible
and so can also be used to mark
curves. The brass nuts on the
arms lock the tool so that repetitions
are achievable. I think the
Point 2 Point started life as a gadget
for spacing buttons on shirts
and planning even Pleats. Some
woody used some iateral thinking
and found a whole new use for it.
