Tri-Scribe Marking Gauge

tri scribe marking gauge precision multifunction woodworking tool mounted on a tri square

The Tri Scribe multifunction marking gauge unit is shown here mounted on a tri square. Anyone who has ever used a traditional marking gauge will know their shortcomings - high centre of gravity, narrow stock face, limited marking range, prone to wobble, tilt and snag, difficult to master and not inherently accurate.

Tri Scribes have a greater degree of accuracy than traditional marking gauges. Normally woodworking marking gauges have only two points of contact - the stock and marking point. Tri Scribes as their name suggest use three points of contact - the base plate, the marking point and the stock face of the square.

The base plate lies flat, square on the workpiece. This flat contact provides stability and prevents wobble and tilt. The base plate also has an angled chamfer that directs load onto the marking point ensuring good contact and consistent marking.

The marking point can be a pencil, scribe or blade. The scribe unit neck alignment and angle provides the optimum position for accurate marking whilst the base plate chamfer ensures good contact. The marking point tip of traditional gauges often snags and the gauge pivots forward losing accuracy and position. With Tri Scribes the base plate is forward of the marking point tip and prevents linear tilt and wobble in the direction of travel.

When Tri Scribes are mounted on a square they have a greater length of stock face than those found on traditional marking gauges. The square's stock face provides greater stability and counteracts any lateral wobble, especially when marking at longer ranges.
